Mercedes Brown is the Director of Race Equity Assessment at the Building Movement Project. In this new role, she is charged with launching and bringing to scale BMP’s new organizational race equity assessment process to better equip the nonprofit sector with the foundational capacities needed to build more racially equitable workplaces. Mercedes brings deep expertise in public policy, data analytics, and equitable cross-systems transformation through nearly 17 years of experience in the social services sector. Throughout her career in government and the nonprofit sector, she has always led with her passion for advancing social and racial justice through complex systems change.

Camryn recently transitioned into the Race Equity Assessment Coordinator role at the Building Movement Project. In this capacity, she is the main point of contact for organizations involved in the BB4C process, addressing technical issues, and collaborating with the Director of Race Equity Assessment to improve assessment accessibility and user experience. In her new role, she collaborates with the Director to establish learning communities, deepen relationships, and forge new partnerships while co-facilitating sessions and developing resources that adapt and translate BMP's research for practitioners and nonprofits. Before joining the Building Movement Project, Camryn earned a master's degree in public administration while working as a capacity builder, where she played a crucial role in developing a race equity framework for Charleston, South Carolina's municipal government. Committed to supporting nonprofits in advancing racial equity, Camryn brings her expertise to support nonprofits as they invest in capacity building with racial equity as a key pillar for broader organizational strategic planning to achieve the mission of their community-oriented work.

Developing the BB4C Assessment
Building Movement Project’s Race to Lead research series revealed the need for nonprofit organizations to invest more effort in advancing race equity in the sector. Seeing this need, BB4C was created to support nonprofit organizations to take their first steps in becoming more racially equitable.
